Trainings

In response to COVID-19, as of March 2020, all of my trainings are now being offered virtually.

These trainings continue to center applied learning, group dialogue, and interactive activities. Please reach out to discuss how I can support your team's professional development during this time of social distancing.

Management & Supervision

**NEW TRAINING APRIL 2020**
Empathic Leadership:
Trauma-Informed Skills for Times of Crisis
This virtual workshop series responds to the current need among nonprofit leaders to provide effective emotional support to their workers amid a public health crisis. It can be offered as a two- or three-part series, and helps leaders understand staff and organizational crisis responses through a trauma-informed lens. This framework offers concrete approaches for helping staff manage their emotions during high-stress periods and maintain staff engagement during a crisis.

These virtual workshops incorporate reflection, skill-development, and relevant resources. Additionally, they provide a supportive space for leaders to discuss and troubleshoot specific challenges related to managing in this moment. The groups are designed to provide participants with a greater sense of community, increase staff engagement, and lower burnout rates.

Essentials of Management:

How to Build Trust & Create Results
This intensive helps new and experienced managers build concrete and soft management skills. The workshop helps managers clarify the key results they are responsible for delivering and begin developing a year-long management plan. Participants will explore how to successfully manage the boundaries of their role, including friendships with staff, and how identity can influence their experiences as a manager.

Managing Staff Performance:
Feedback and Performance Issues
This intensive workshop provides a foundation for performance management, including a framework for giving effective feedback, how to assess staff performance problems, and to develop an effective plan for responding. The course incorporates consideration of how the identities of supervisor and supervisee can impact performance assessment, and strategies for managing implicit bias.

Clinical Supervision Crash Course
Clinical supervisors are often thrown into their roles without any formal training, yet effective clinical supervision has a huge impact on quality of client care, staff turnover, and vicarious trauma. This skills-focused workshop provides a strong foundation for understanding the primary role and tasks of the clinical supervisor. It explores common ethical and practice challenges of clinical supervision, with particular attention to agency-based settings. The workshop addresses professional development stages of clinical staff, and how to support as a supervisor. Participants will have significant opportunity to practice skills and discuss real-life supervision challenges.

Strength-Based Approaches to Management
This workshop explores how strength-based approaches often used in social work can also apply to managing social work staff. The course will review the basic principles of strength-based practices, and then examine the connection to current research related to strength-based management practices.  Participants will review tools that can be used to identify their own and their supervisees strengths, and learn how “stretch assignments” can be used to build on staff strengths and skills.

The Strategic Manager: Managing Goals & Priorities in Crisis-Driven Environments
This workshop helps participants strengthen their strategic planning skills, through a rigorous goal-setting and prioritization process. Participants will learn a simple tool for determining which urgent issues require their hands-on intervention as managers, and how to effectively redirect low-importance issues back to their supervisees. Participants assess how they are expending their time and energy in the work place, and develop a plan for focusing on their highest impact goals.

Clinical Practice

Crisis Management & De-escalation
Social service workers frequently encounter clients in various levels of crisis. This is my most popular clinical skills workshop. An intensive approach to building core skills, it helps participants recognize and prevent interpersonal crisis situations before they happen, and learn to de-escalate crises when necessary. Using a trauma-informed perspective this workshop will review triggers, flight-freeze responses, and practice ways of calming escalated people. This workshop is typically a half-day, but can be extended to all-day for additional practice opportunities.

Introduction to Facilitation
This workshop is an intensive introduction to group facilitation, ideal for new facilitators. The workshop includes an overview of facilitator styles, an overview of key skills to facilitating effective groups and meetings, and in-depth practice exercises to strengthen these skills in challenging scenarios.

Suicidality: Assessment and Safety Planning
This skills-focused workshop strengthens clinicians’ ability to effectively assess for client suicidality and collaboratively safety plan. Participants will learn to identify suicidality risk factors and warning signs. The workshop reviews the core elements of a suicide risk assessment, evidence-based tools, and safety planning practices.

Burnout and Self-Care
This workshop provides an overview of factors contributing to burnout and how staff can engage in ongoing self-care. Participants will identify their personal stress signals, increase awareness of how stress impacts their colleagues in the workplace, and begin creating collective strategies to prevent burnout. Participants will practice burn-out prevention techniques during the workshop, and build their practical knowledge of how to reduce burnout on the job.

Vicarious Trauma & Resilience
This workshop provides a deeper dive into the dynamics of burnout, vicarious trauma, and resiliency. It addresses individual and workplace factors with vicarious trauma and resiliency, and provides evidence-based tools and strategies for reducing VT. In this workshop participants will develop a personal plan to increase resilience, and create strategies for cultivating a workplace culture that supports self-care and resilience. Ideal for teams looking to build connections and cultivate a supportive culture.
